Piazza San Marco

Piazza San Marco is one of the most iconic and renowned sites in Venice, Italy. Located in the heart of Venice, this large square is known for being a popular tourist destination and is considered to be the very symbol of the city. It was once even described as “the drawing room of Europe” by Napoleon Bonaparte.

The grandeur of Piazza San Marco will take your breath away from its impressive architecture consisting of St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace and many other monuments. From landmarks such as the Torre dell’Orologio to ornate bridges like Rialto Bridge that connect different parts of Venice, there are numerous attractions here which make it a must-visit site for any traveller to this region.

Doge’s Palace

Doge’s Palace is one of the top tourist attractions in Venice, Italy. The palace was built in 1340 and served as the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the republic. It stands today as a magnificent example of Venetian Gothic architecture, boasting elaborately decorated marble walls and ceilings and ornate sculptures throughout. Visitors flock to see its grand courtyards, impressive staircases, beautiful paintings by Renaissance masters such as Tintoretto and Veronese, and Bridge of Sighs which connects it to the prison. Inside are many fascinating rooms such as the Council Chamber where state business was conducted, an armory with weapons from past wars on display, an astronomical clock that still works today after 400 years, and two secret passages used by spies during times when civil judgments were being made.

Rialto Bridge

The Rialto Bridge is a must-see tourist attraction when visiting Venice, Italy. Spanning the Grand Canal and creating a link between the sestieri of San Polo and San Marco, this iconic bridge is one of four that cross the canal. Built in 1588, it was one of the earliest bridges to be constructed across such a large body of water. The Rialto Bridge has been both an important trade route and tourist attraction throughout its centuries-long existence. Its design features two inclined ramps on either side which meet at a central portico; originally built with wood, it was replaced with stone in 1310 due to its condition after severe weathering over several decades. Today, tourists marvel at this time-honoured icon as they wander along its length or take pictures from afar.

St Mark’s Basilica

St Mark’s Basilica is one of the top tourist attractions in Venice, Italy. It stands as a symbol of Venetian wealth and opulence, with its ornate exterior walls and bell towers. Built in the 11th century, it has served for centuries as the main church of Venice and remains an icon in the city’s rich cultural history. Visitors to St Mark’s Basilica can explore its vast interior filled with priceless works of art and stunning mosaics. Its impressive façade is decorated with marble statues depicting various religious figures, while inside visitors will find a magnificent collection of sculptures by great Italian masters like Donatello. Many tourists also flock to St Mark’s Basilica for its incredible acoustics – it serves as a popular venue for concerts throughout the year.
