The easiest way to reach the islands is by flying into Panama City and there we reommend you go with a tour operators that offer day trips, overnight trips, and multi-day packages that include transportation, meals, and activities on the islands. Going there by yourself is possible but can be dificult as not much public transportation is available and roads to the port of Carti are in bad shape. Here is one possible tour operator for San Blas that we have used in the past and they offer a great variety of San Blas tours. Also be prepared as you and your bags may get wet on the way out the boats to the islans are small and the waves can be sometimes pretty high so best wrap your electronics (camera, phones etc.) in plastic bags. From December to April, besides being the high season period, it is also the period of the winds and therefore the most agitated sea in some days. Also the tour operator notes on their website: You must be in good enough physical condition to board the boats from the beach.

You can book a one day tour leaf early in the morning and be back in the city in the evening or  stay for one or more nights on one of the islands. One of the most popular options is staying in a traditional Kuna Indian hut, which offers a unique cultural experience and a chance to immerse yourself in the local way of life. Also here we recommend you go with a tour operator that organizes the accommodation.
