Tips for Birdwatching in Panama

To make the most of your birdwatching experience in Panama, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. Hire a local guide: A local guide can help you navigate the country’s diverse terrain and identify the many bird species that call Panama home. And important its very easy to get lost in the rainforest and has happened many times so better safe the sorry!
  2. What time of year is best for birding in Panama? Well most will tell you the dry season from December to March, that is probably a good time BUT I personally like the rainy season even better the rain forest seams to come much more alive and with proper rain protection you can hike anytime.
  3. Wear appropriate clothing: Panama’s tropical climate can be hot and humid, so wear light, breathable clothing and comfortable shoes.
  4. Bring the right equipment: Don’t forget to bring your binoculars, camera, and a good field guide to identify the birds you see. We recommend this guide here: The Birds of Panama: A Field Guide (Zona Tropical Publications) Paperback – Illustrated available here at Amazon.
  5. Having enough food and water is essential for a safe and enjoyable hike.
  6. Be respectful of the environment: When birdwatching, it’s important to be mindful of your impact on the environment. Stay on designated trails, do not disturb the birds or their habitats, and dispose of your trash properly.
