Well there are some many choices and there is something for every budget. BUT you can start simply with your cell phone that probably has a good camera, I love to keep it small so my choice would be a Ricoh GR 3 thats a small pocketable camera with an excellent lens and top image quality, of course there are many more choices for the advanced photographer but I wont go into that here, you can check out some good info here on travel cameras and whats available in a variety of price ranges.
